McAllen, TX: TEDxMcAllen is accepting applications for tickets to our inaugural TEDxMcAllen event through August 14th 2015. The event will be taking place Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the McAllen Convention Center. Apply for tickets online at http://tedxmcallen.us
If you are interested in changing the world around you, increasing the perception of our area, and are fascinated with ideas worth spreading, this event is for you.
Featuring 18 speakers with some of the top ideas and pivotal concepts in our area, TEDxMcAllen is a meeting of those who hunger for ideas and ways to improve our lives brought together with speakers whose ideas are impactful, transformational, and more importantly meant to drive the community to be better.
To apply for tickets to this very exclusive event, visit us online at texmcallen.us where you will find a ticket application asking you questions such as:
- Who are you?
- What have you done for community?
- Why should we choose you?
- and what will you do with the knowledge you’ve gained at TEDxMcAllen?
Once the ticket application process has been completed, 50 attendees will be hand selected by the TEDxMcAllen board. “It’s not important who you are, how much money you have, or who you work for. We are going to be basing our selection on the merits of the application itself. We want to make sure that those who wish to impact our community and the world around us have the opportunity to do so” said Drew Lentz, curator and licensee for TEDxMcAllen. “This event is about changing our community by highlighting those who have ideas and critical thinking that is absolutely necessary to the growth of McAllen, the valley around us, in the world we are part of.”
Those chosen to receive the opportunity for tickets will be asked to purchase two tickets. “It’s never fun to try and change the world on your own, so we want to make sure you have someone sitting beside you who is as enthusiastic as you are. There is a high level of trust that the person that you invite will be someone who cannot only appreciate the event, and the speakers, but will also use that information to impact the community” Guest Services Director, Ileana Garcia-Spitz commented.
The audience is limited, as per TED bylaws, to no more than 100 attendees. This keeps the event intimate and captivating to all who attend. “We are not interested in producing an event where thousands of people will show up with little more than a desire to watch a presentation. We expect our audience members to be fully focused on the presentations at hand, to commit to an entire day of learning about the concepts and ideas changing our world, and to leave with an enlightened in enthusiastic feeling” Lentz continued.
TEDxMcAllen is an organization that seeks to provide a number of opportunities in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley for people to share ideas, learn about our local innovators, and help figure out how to transform our community into the best that it can be. We were created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading.” Our events are planned and coordinated by a team of volunteers with support from individuals and organizations from across the Rio Grande Valley.
Since our first event in 2014, we have been striving to find the most captivating stories, ideas, and inspiration in our area. Through our events we hope to share those stories with you to ignite change at every level and give you an outlet to take your thoughts and turn them into transformative actions in our communities.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast event in nearby Whistler. The annual TEDGlobal conference will be held this October in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
